A maternity nurse can provide a smooth introduction to
helping you and your new baby settle into family life.
As well as advising on, and helping you with, feeding
your baby, a maternity nurse is responsible for all the
physical needs of the baby. This will include bathing,
changing and settling your baby, as well as taking care
of baby's laundry and nursery.
A maternity nurse has a wealth of experience to offer
first time parents and can be a great source of help
and advice, not only about the development and well being
of the baby, but also that of the new mother. The nurse
will encourage your involvement, develop your confidence
in handling your new baby and promote a positive relationship
between other siblings and the new addition.
A maternity nurse understands the impact of a baby's
arrival on new parents, and will offer advice on the
mother's diet and rest. The nurse will also help in establishing
and maintaining breast-feeding, or offer advice about
bottle-feeding.
The maternity nurse will do everything possible to help
your baby establish a good routine of feeding and sleeping,
with a view to helping your baby sleep through the night.
However, there can be no guarantee that this will be
achieved by the time your nurse finishes her time with
you.
If you choose to have a live-in maternity nurse, she
could share a room with the baby or have her own room,
whichever suits your circumstances better. If your nurse
is expected to be on duty for 24 hours please remember
that, just as a mother can get very tired from broken
sleep, so too can a maternity nurse, especially after
a night with a fretful or unsettled baby. It is important
that the nurse has time to rest and take breaks so that
she can remain pleasant and effective at all times.
Nights only Maternity Nurse
Night maternity nurses may live in but usually live out
and will work for up to six nights per week. Most will
work from between 8 to 10 p.m. until 7 to 8 a.m. and
be off duty during the day. They specialise in getting
particularly wakeful babies to sleep through the night.
Daily Maternity nurse
Daily maternity nurses generally live out and usually
work between 10 and 12 hours per day up to six days
per week. Daily maternity nurses are ideal for families
who have limited space or who prefer not to have someone
living in.
Maternity Nanny
Maternity nannies are very experienced nannies with expertise
in caring for newborn babies. Maternity nannies usually
live in and are on call 24 hours a day, and will take
care of night feeding. A maternity nanny can be a good
option for families where there are other siblings,
because she will happily look after one or the other
to suit, although not at the same time.
